What is the Law with Car Horns in the US?
Car horns today can be outrageous. Take your pick from bells to catcalls, train whistles, to full orchestral arrangements. Pay the price, and you can have it. This is not to say that the government will allow it, however, but even this varies from state to state.
Let’s take one type of horn, the train whistle, and look at how it varies from state to state in just a few jurisdictions.
Most of the areas of the country have one primary rule with regards to car horns: they can not emit an unreasonably loud or harsh sound . This is usually understood to be louder than 100 to 110 decibels. This is compared to a train horn which generally operates at 130 to 150 decibels. A few states and their regulations are listed below:In California, a train horn can be mounted on a car but not used. On a semi-truck, it is allowed if it is attached to the air brake system, powered by the air from the brake system, complies with FMVSS standards 121 and 106, and has the appropriate certifications. If you are found to have violated those terms, you can receive a minimum $108 fine if there are no other violations or citations on your CDL.
In Texas, an annual inspection is required for all motor vehicles. If during the inspection, a train horn is found to be hooked up and able to be used as a regular warning, the vehicle will fail the inspection. It can, however, be hooked up on a truck as part of a commercial vehicle theft alarm. If the train horn is hooked up and used, you can recieve a citation for noise pollution and be held liable for any resulting accidents.
In Georgia the vehicle modification laws state that one could be used as part of an alarm system but not hooked up to be used as a regular warning system. Violation of this could result in a possible citation or moving violation.
Virginia law states that all warning devices must be approved by the Superintendent. A train horn could be used as part of an alarm or anti-theft system. However, it must be installed so that it cannot be used when the vehicle is in motion.
In most other states the only types of vehicles allowed to have any type of air horn are emergency vehicles.
To check the specifics in your area, check your state’s DMV or BMV website. Check laws specifically for horns, but also for vehicle modifications. A train horn would require an air compression system to operate, making it subject to the modification laws. Not all states have a law specifically prohibiting the horn being mounted on a vehicle, only the use of it as a standard warning device.
Car Horn Etiquette: The Dos and Don’ts of Honking Your Horn
When used responsibly, car horns should notify drivers of danger, helping to prevent accidents and keep everyone on the road safer.
But that’s only when used appropriately.
When used “inappropriately” or incessantly , car horns are not only irritating, they can be distracting and dangerous as well. For example, if you’re busy honking at a driver who’s moving too slowly, you’re probably not paying close attention to the road. Not to mention the fact that the sound of a car horn can be jarring and you don’t want to unnecessarily disrupt anybody operating a 5,000-lb metal box on wheels, unless it’s to avoid some sort of danger.
How To Deal With Road Rage – Use your horn only when necessary
Most of us spend an hour or two in the car daily, and nothing is more frustrating than spending that time surrounded by idiot drivers. The fact of the matter is, all the swearing, horn-honking, name calling and aggressive tailgating in the world won’t make you feel better nor make the clueless person you’re stuck behind any better of a driver. Road rage only leads to trouble. Here are a few tips for you to consider next time you feel like running some jerk off the road.
Pick your tunes wisely
You want to create the most peaceful atmosphere possible while in your car. Choose a genre that helps you keep your zen. For some people Heavy metal music is cathartic, but for others, it’s enraging. Use CD’s, cassettes (if your ride predates The Rolling Stones) or your iPod- not through headphones- and avoid Rush Limbaugh on the radio if possible. There’s nothing worse than being stuck in traffic listening to that fat blow-hard telling us how the current administration is ruining America. Which brings me to my next point…
Avoid driving during rush hour at all costs
Plan your travel time for earlier or later and get to know your city’s busiest commuting times, it’s different everywhere, but most places have rush hours in the morning from around 7 am to 9 am then again in the early evening from about 4 pm to 6 pm. If your whole day depends on traveling through these times then you should look into alternative modes of transportation, either bus or train, or carpooling as an option, it’s always a good idea to have other people around you to defuse the tension.
Take back roads to avoid traffic
On your way to and fro, check for alternative routes through back roads. Seriously, there is nothing more peaceful than a drive through the country. The roads less traveled are also useful for avoiding highway construction projects that could lead to major delays.
Make sure you don’t have to go to the bathroom
It may seem juvenile but make a quick trip to John before getting behind the wheel. My most vulgar, curse-ridden-rants came from an overly full bladder. “Having to go” leads to erratic and restless driving more so than anything else.
Leave with plenty of time to get to your destination
Give yourself a half hour buffer to account for traffic or any other unforeseen circumstances that could lead to a delay in your travel. Being late to work is a trigger for road rage.
When driving we’re not all going to the same place at the same time, but it is imperative to be forgiving of poor drivers or road conditions, life happens! We have all heard the stories and seen the YouTube videos of people yelling at each other and even getting in fistfights over serendipitous lane merges or other careless driving maneuvers. Heed this simple advice, and you won’t be the next viral road raging sensation, I assure you.

What is the loudest truck horn? I know of train horns, but whats the most powerful and loud?
I would say the #1 horns would be the air driven horns, followed by the speaker driven horns, and then the mechanical horns that worked by a fluttering piece of metal activated by a pulse type magnetic coil
I’m looking to get one of those novelty horns. There are 4 things I’m looking for:
1. Easy to install
2. Loud volume
3. PA system
4. plays La Cucaracha 🙂
Which make/model should I get to cover everything?
What car has the best horn? I hate wimpy car horns.
Buick Park Avenue. Sounds like a train. I believe it has 4 horns. I would love that.
Since I have a ridiculous amount of unused vacation to burn by the end of the year, I’m taking tomorrow off to take the resurrected Blazer up to dig around salvage yards.
One thing I could use is a new horn. The D’s stock horn was shot, so I installed one of the (air quotes) ‘super loud’ one from Harbor Freight. Yeaaaah… that didn’t work out so well, and it’s largely dead now too.
So, what are some good cars to pull a loud, attention-getting stock horn from? I don’t tend to use it much, but I really need it because of how low and easily overlooked (literally) the D is when other driver’s aren’t paying attention.
Thanks!

Hella like a bus horn
Bosch is better
The reason why the ford expidtion horn is hard to honk is cause its a Leather lock horn its not a spring horn thats easy to horn and when you press it it makes a click Well for the ford expidition it doesnt do that. its flexible and leathery
I like the deeper sound of Wolo’s horn but don’t know if getting 2 would effectively be any louder because it’s the same Hz/frequency?
Wolo’s Model 619, BIG BAD MAX
Better to go with one of the above and one of these?
Wolo’s Model 419 Bad Boy™
Both have the same volume rating, 123 db.
Two tones, generated at the same volume, will create a third tone, called the beat frequency.
Usually, the combination of tones is more discernible to the ear.
Personally, I’d go with the single tone. Less to go wrong.
If you want loud: FIAMM 72112
Feels like my normal car horn is not enough anymore. Anyone has any aftermarket loud horns that they have had good experience with? For a 99 Civic EK3 but I don’t think what car it is matters lol
Hella Supertones.
I’ve been using them for the last decade plus. They are excellent.
