At what temperature does engine oil freeze?
Engine oil has no single freezing temperature that applies to every formulation. Cold-weather data describe different properties, including pour point, cranking viscosity, and pumpability; none alone establishes a safe starting temperature for your vehicle. Use the exact oil grade and approvals required by its manual. If an oil-pressure warning occurs while the engine is running, stop safely, switch off as directed, and obtain qualified assistance rather than attempting to warm it away.
What happens before oil stops flowing?
Viscosity means resistance to flow. ExxonMobil's technical FAQ explains that engine oil thickens as it gets colder. Low-temperature performance requires avoiding excessive thickening or gelling, while high-temperature performance requires avoiding excessive thinning.
That makes “has it frozen solid?” the wrong practical test. An engine needs appropriate lubrication, not merely oil that remains visibly liquid in a container. A laboratory result for a named formulation also cannot diagnose the condition of oil already inside an engine.
Shell's explanation of oil additives identifies wax crystals in cold mineral oils as a cause of reduced fluidity. Formulation matters. Do not translate that mechanism into a claim that all oils solidify together at one temperature.

Is pour point the same as freezing point?
No. Pour point is a low-temperature flow property reported using a specified test method. Shell describes it as the lowest temperature at which oil may flow. ASTM's public summary for D97-17b(2022) calls it an indicator of low-temperature usefulness for certain applications.
Read the qualification: certain applications. A pour-point entry is not a vehicle manufacturer's lowest permitted starting temperature. It also does not report that every constituent has undergone a single liquid-to-solid transition.
Always retain the method designation next to the number. D97 identifies a particular procedure; ASTM notes that automated alternatives have their own designations. A copied temperature without its property name and method loses information needed to interpret it.
Do not perform a household freezer or heating experiment. This article explains published results; it does not provide a laboratory procedure or a test of used oil.
How do CCS and MRV differ?
Two other measurements address different cold-weather behavior:

ASTM D5293-25 explicitly distinguishes CCS cranking correlation from prediction of flow to the oil pump and distribution system. It also cautions that CCS does not necessarily predict a specific engine's cranking behavior accurately.
ASTM D4684-20a addresses yield stress and apparent viscosity after controlled cooling. Its public explanation connects cooling history and gel formation with pumpability problems. The rate and duration of cooling matter to the laboratory result.
These summaries explain why the measurements are not interchangeable. They are not the full paid standards, and this guide does not reproduce their test procedures or a complete SAE grading table.
What do actual product entries look like?
The following is a document-reading comparison, not a product recommendation or a hands-on test. Values were checked on the linked manufacturer pages on September 8, 2026.

Both entries say 0W-20, yet their reported pour points differ. The product families and page markets differ too; these are not interchangeable descriptions of one bottle. Match the full product name and documentation for your market.
The second page separately reports MRV apparent viscosity of 17,600 mPa.s at -40°C using ASTM D4684. That is a viscosity result at a stated test temperature, not another pour point. The unit and property name prevent the two rows being confused.
Nothing in this comparison establishes that either oil is approved for your engine, that the colder pour point makes one universally better, or that a start near either number is permissible.
Does the W number give a freezing temperature?
No. Castrol's grade explanation identifies W as winter and relates the first part of a multigrade designation to low-temperature viscosity under SAE J300. The second part concerns higher-temperature viscosity.
The designation 0W-20 is not a temperature interval from zero to twenty degrees. Nor does 0W mean oil freezes at 0°C. Use the vehicle's approved grade and performance requirements together; do not select a different grade solely because its first number is lower.
What should you check before winter?
Make a document record before buying oil or requesting service. This is an original worksheet, not a maintenance procedure:
- Vehicle: exact model year, engine, and market.
- Manual: required viscosity grade, performance specifications, and any applicable ambient-temperature chart.
- Oil: full product name, grade, regional data-sheet address, and date consulted.
- Cold properties: property name, numerical result, unit, test temperature where applicable, and method.
- Unresolved question: what the manufacturer or qualified service provider still needs to confirm.
For example, a fictional record containing only “0W-20; -48” is incomplete. The documented example above needs the product/page identity, pour-point label, Celsius unit, and D97 method. Even a complete row does not establish vehicle approval.
ExxonMobil's US product page expressly directs owners to the manual for viscosity, API classification, and builder approval. Follow any vehicle-specific cold-weather instructions. Do not use data-sheet numbers to invent a different starting sequence, warming interval, heater installation, or oil treatment.
What if the engine has an oil-pressure warning?
Do not classify the warning as harmless cold oil. The 2022 Ram 2500/3500 manual illustrates the distinction: its pressure-warning instruction requires stopping, shutting down, and contacting an authorized dealer; it says not to operate until the cause is corrected. That light does not measure oil quantity.
Follow your own dashboard and manual immediately. Arrange qualified assistance, keep clear of traffic and hot or moving components, and do not improvise heating or repeated restarts to clear a warning.
